The spread of mediocre pop punk and x-factor trash can be likened to a disease, infesting the world with it’s bland riffs and soulless vocals, but don’t fear people luckily there is a cure for this disease and that cure is called Healthy Junkies!
Proper Punk, or as some will call it ‘Old School’, I’ve even heard it called Traditional Punk, frankly I don’t give a fuck what you wanna call it, it’s bloody good. Grinding guitars and vocals that rape your ear drums then don’t even leave them bus fare, that’s what it’s all about and in Healthy Junkies we get it in vast quantities. Front woman Nina Courson has a tone to her voice that tempts you in with promises of tenderness but then opens up to reveal the true ravishing glory of real Grunge vocals that many have attempted but failed to get close to.
The Lost Refuge is collection of fast paced songs that batter along at a speed which can be likened to a frantic stabbing, relentlessly hitting you with every note forcing you to get lost in the raw emotion of the tracks. The lyrics are exactly what you’d expect from a band with this quality, clever, current and full of wit and straight to the point with no fucking around. The sound of the album remains unchained throughout and in keeping with everything we’ve heard from the band before, everything is tight with no margin for error, every member giving it 100% from start to finish.
It’s a testament to the British music industry that bands like Healthy Junkies are still making amazing music and we should be doing more to give this music to the rest of the world. This band represents a wealth of talent and this album is probably one of the best put together punk offerings to come out of this island in 2013.
For raw energy this album is a chart topper for me, I love every track and Nina Courson’s vocals are up there with the very best of them, as a fan of real 90’s grunge this is what I love to hear when I’m out and the world would be a much better place if there was more of it. Head on over to Healthy Junkies’ FaceBook page and make sure you see these guys on stage near you soon.
