Fans of American Post-Hardcore band Senses Fail have been left dribbling for new material for some time after the release of the greatest hits album and now here it is ready for the screamo in you to unleash it’s fury unto the world.
Renancer, which is apparently spanish for “To Be Reborn”, opens in typically hardcore fashion, kicking in the door of your sound system like a SWAT team looking for a drug lord, clubbing it’s way in and shouting in your face. It’s a welcome refreshment and a bold move from the experienced band, opening with such a strong song may lead to disappointment in the rest of the album but I’m pleased to say that isn’t the case, there’s just the right balance of rage and self awareness in the album and the move toward a much heavier sound works for them.
There’s a couple of stand-out tracks here, most notably Canine which is an aggressive explosion coupled with some subtle hints of the old Senses Fail dropped in just to remind fans where it all started. Similarly Ancient Tombs gives us that classic Hardcore growl but rounded off with some melodic overtones, the writing on these tracks is top notch and the sound is what you would expect from such seasoned professionals.
Overall the album is pretty good, I like the new direction the band has taken and they deliver their sound well without sounding like little boys trying to be big boys, the question is how will die-hard fans, who have waited so long for new material, cope with the change of pace? Also, with the Hardcore section already being kept warm by 2013 releases from the likes of Hatebreed and Killswitch Engage, can Renancer hold it’s own against such power houses? I guess we’ll see when it’s released 26th March 2013.
