Obscure Pleasures is this alternative/new wave Birmingham based band which I recently discovered and immediately loved .They have these dark, gloomy mixes and influences from Joy Division or The Cure which will take you back to those good old days in the 80’s.
And in a couple of days, on the 30th of January, their new single, ‘Private Peep Show’, this dark, fierce, immorally good sounding track will be released and will be available for digital download.
I will talk a bit about this song just to let you craving for it for a few more days. The song has a strong sexual theme that you can perceive straight from the title, ’Private peep show’, which refers to these sex shows that are watched through a viewing slot .It is a single about pleasure and pain, it’s about the twisted pleasure that comes from pain, it’s about the performing mistress’ image in the eyes of the slave.
The song begins with a few seconds of this wind-like sound that starts to blend after a few seconds with a dark and fast electro beat which takes over the intro and then suddenly stops as the first verse begins .The beat slows down and leaves the voice take over, this clear, strong and calm but dark voice that talks about desire and pain, about pleasure that comes from pain, about the mistress and her show.
And then the fast, dark beat from the beginning repeats itself and mingles with the voice in a fierce chorus that concludes ‘This is the only way my body can feel alive today’. It slows down again and these vivid, decadent images of the mistress go on and on until you hear the ‘voice’ of the mistress towards the end of the song. And the songs ends slowly in sombre piano chords and the lyrics ‘All I want is you to suffer, all you need from me is pain’ slowly repeating themselves until the voice fades and the song finishes.
I hope you will enjoy this dark, twisted, new-wave symphony as much as I did and don’t forget to check them out in London – on the 6th of February and in Manchester the very next day where they will be supporting William Control.
