Fist City have unveiled their raucous, new B-movie inspired video for ‘Let’s Rip’, taken from their forthcoming album It’s 1983, Grow Up, reissued by Transgressive Records on May 19th.

The girl gang video was directed by Fist City’s guitarist/lead singer Kier Fist who explains the making of this awesome concept:

Coming up with the idea for the video was pretty easy – the song is about falling for a knife-wielding tough-gal in a girl gang so we just went with that. We told our pals to meet us at this dumpy bar called Cudos with weapons and fake blood. Our bass player Brittany and few other friends bartend there and knew that the bar owner was out of town; so we pretty much took the place over. I wanted the video to be campy, violent, and fun. The whole thing was done on a zero dollar budget; it came together with a few pitchers of beer and the radness of a pack of weirdo pals who came out to get vicious and bloodied.”

Let’s Rip’ is one of two new tracks added to the remastered album, following its original release. The new edition of the album will be released on vinyl alongside a limited edition cassette version on Jen Long’s Transgressive imprint, Kissability.

Forming in Lethbridge, a smallish southern Alberta town, in 2010, Fist City jelled from the ashes of various punk bands to form a storming blend of garage-fuelled, surf-tinged, scuzzy rock n roll. The band just cruised through the UK recently leaving a no-holds-barred live show and uncompromising attitude over a whistle stop tour that visited Manchester, Bristol and London.

REVIEW: The Bermondsey Joyriders – Brian Jones (The Real True Leader of The Rolling Stones) / Johnny Thunders Was A Human Being

Posted by on Mar 31, 2014 in Featured, Record Releases, Reviews, Videos | 0 comments

They’re back! The punk rock blues booze hounds that are the Bermondsey Joyriders return with this double A-Side celebrating the lives (and deaths) of two of their own idols.

We here at the Black Flag love the Bermondsey Joyriders and both of these tracks highlight them at their very best. True it’s a slight departure from the social commentary of their last album ‘Noise and Revolution’ but perhaps a new direction is a good thing as nobody want to keep treading over the same ground and transferring their gritty blues punk sound away from the subject of social decay highlights just how versatile and great a band the Bermondsey Joyriders really are.

Both tracks really shine, especially Brian Jones (The Real True Leader of The Rolling Stones)  where the bands raw instrumentals and  Gary Lammins almost Ferrell growl will suck you in and spit you like a piece of half-digested vindaloo. You could almost be fooled into believing that you’re in the Soho bar that he sings about at the beginning of the track, listening to the song being performed for the first time, which is one the bands real strengths that shone out on their previous album.

All in all both tracks showcase an incredible band doing what they do best and proving that they can follow up the runaway success, that was Noise and Revolution with two great tracks that are sure to be classed as classics in due time. Roll on the new album. The Bermondsey Joyriders are back with avengence….

The Bermondsey Joyriders will play a bargain-priced launch bash at The Black Heart in Camden on April 8th, to mark the release of their upcoming double a-side single ‘Brian Jones (The Real True Leader Of The Rolling Stones) / Johnny Thunders Was A Human Being’.  Out on 7” white vinyl on April 14th, the new single pays tribute to two of the Joyriders’ favourite late, great guitarists – The Rolling Stones’ Brian Jones, and New York Dolls / Heartbreakers icon Johnny Thunders.

Punters at The Black Heart party will have an exclusive opportunity to pick up copies of the 7” prior the official release, and will also be the first to hear The Bermondsey Joyriders air material from their forthcoming third album ‘Flamboyant Thugs’, which is set to follow the single on May 26th through Fuel Records.  Completing the bill, and offering attendees even more rock ‘n’ roll action for their mere £3 admission fee, are fellow London punks Bubblegum Screw and The Healthy Junkies.  It all happens at;

Tues 8th April – LONDON, The Black Heart (1-3 Greenland Place, Camden, NW1 0AP)
w/Bubblegum Screw & The Healthy Junkies
Doors – 7.30pm.  Admission – £3 on the door

Murderously catchy, endorphin-boosting, shout-along guitar music.” – Pitchfork

A band of brothers brimming with boyish energy and burn-down-the-house exuberance” – Rolling Stone

A prickly take on salt-of-the-Earth punk rock” –SPIN

One of the most respected acts in New York’s DIY scene, The So So Glos, will release their explosive new album Blowout in the UK on May 17th via Votiv/Caroline International/Shea Stadium Records. The album is available to pre-order now.

A rousing and energetic call to arms, Blowout is a definite statement from the Brooklyn punks, as demonstrated in the stop-motion video for the album’s title track, which can be seen now on their YouTube channel.

The video was created by singer/bassist Alex Levine, along with Maddy Rojas. Alex describes the video as, “a trip through So So Glow mania, ending in a black hole record which sucks us through the universe”. It’s a tripped out journey, straight from the heart and mind of one Brooklyn’s brightest young bands.

The So So Glos are made up by brothers Alex and Ryan Levine, their step-brother Zach Staggers and their best friend Matt Elkins and began playing as kids in 1991. You can trace Blowout back to those early days – the album begins and ends with a home recording of the Levine brothers as children listening to and re-enacting a Nirvana song. “There’s a video of us listening to Nevermind,” explains Ryan, “And the record stops during ‘Come As You Are’. Alex is like ‘Do you think he has a gun? I know he has a gun!’ He was responding to Kurt Cobain’s line, calling bullsh*t on our heroes.”

That’s not what Blowout does explicitly throughout its eleven boisterous yet poppy songs, but that willingness – even as young children – to challenge underpins the essence of the record. These are short, snappy songs inspired equally by British and American punk, and which are as poppy and catchy as they are acerbic.

There’s the brash brattiness of ‘Son of an American’ that kicks off the record, a high-octane rallying call for the underdog that segues into the debauched party antics of ‘House Of Glass’. ‘Diss Town’ has a distinctively English clang to its jaunty chug, while the title track seems to charge through, in under three minutes, a multitude of different kinds of punk, yet full of the spark and zest that makes the So So Glos stand out.

Of the album, Ryan says: “It’s a party, a victory, a flat tyre, an explosion. We went into the studio with that vision.”

Revered in New York, the So So Glos co-founded Brooklyn’s Shea Stadium – an all-ages, DIY music venue which has helped cultivate established acts such as Titus Andronicus and rising stars like Big Ups and Diarrhea Planet and has recently seen shows from the likes of Wavves, Metz, Trash Talk and Speedy Ortiz.

The So So Glos bring this community spirit to their ferocious yet fun live shows. Alex says: “We try to make every party pop off in an insane sort of mosh pit meets old skool NY hip-hop type fashion. We want to engage and encouraging people to put their cell phones away and mosh up the dance floor like it’s a rave or the Wu Tang Clan with guitars and leather jackets talking about love and generational apathy… as naturally as Brooklyn brothers can!”

Blowout will be released on May 17th
